RAK Wrap-Up

Huging Dad on BeachMy very first goal has been complete! Hooray!

I’m both excited and relieved. To be honest, it was a lot more difficult than I originally thought it would be. First of all, I had to come up with a unique act to perform each day, and then I had to actually do it. It was especially hard I think because I was supposed to be taking advantage of opportunities. However, if these opportunities didn’t present themselves to me, then I had to make them myself. Read More…

Day 14: To Be Continued…

For my very last RAK, I wanted to really help someone in need. I had the idea of going to a hospital or elderly home and give someone a “hope you are well” card. I figured, one of the best ways to speed up recovery is to feel happy. And so that was my mission. Make someone feel happy.

First, I went out to a local pharmacy to find myself a card. Unfortunately, most cards you find in a store don’t cater to my unusual task of cheering up someone you don’t actually know. I couldn’t pick up anything that said mother, father, brother, grandparent, friend, etc. And I didn’t want to get a card that had a specific event or purpose on it either, so that ruled out birthday, holiday, thank you, and sympathy cards. There wasn’t a whole lot left to chose from. However, I finally found one with a little cartoon turtle saying, “you can get through by taking things step by step by step.” I thought it was just vague enough to apply to anyone I might give it to and it was also uplifting. I did end up spending a bit more than a dollar on the card, but I thought it was okay in the long run since none of my previous RAKs cost me anything. Read More…

Something to Consider

I have more time on my hands now, so I thought I’d let you all know about a few things that have been going on. I already said that I would not perform a RAK today (Day 13); however, I found one (ironically enough) that I wanted to share.

I decided to do some laundry before leaving for Thanksgiving, and in the laundry room I saw a sign on the wall written in marker. It was a note from someone saying that their laundry detergent had been stolen from the laundry room, this after the person already had a very bad day. They were asking that whoever took it please return it. Beneath the note, someone had written a response on a small notecard. The response read something like this: “Dear Yours Truly [the person signed their note as "Yours Truly"], I don’t know who you are, but your story made me sad. I don’t know who took your detergent, but here’s an octopus.” Read More…

Day 12 & 13: Resolving Some Issues

I had every intention of continuing with my random acts of kindness, despite any other challenges or developments that happened to crop up in my life. However, due to my illness, a large project I had to complete, as well as a recent (though minor) family emergency, I was and am unable to do much of anything these past two days.

I knew from the onset of this goal that I might run into such complications because I new the past two weeks would be pretty hectic for me. I am saddened I am unable to fully complete my goal, yet it does not end here. I still have one more day tomorrow and there is still one more RAK that I’ve wanted to to do from the very beginning. I want to end this challenge on a positive note, since that is the whole point of it after all. Read More…

Day 11: Farewell

With Thanksgiving approaching so quickly, people are beginning to travel. Especially this weekend I noticed many people starting to pack up and go home or to wherever they plan to spend their Thanksgiving holidays. I decided to use this opportunity to be impractically nice to people. :)

I had mentioned in an earlier post that I have a desk job where I screen a large number of residents and guests. Having such a job opens up the opportunity to overhear a good portion of conversations between people. I abused the position a bit last night when I found out that one of the building’s residents would be leaving for home the next morning and made a mental note of it. Naturally, my job calls for a fair amount of confidentiality, so recording information such as names or room numbers is certainly goes against the expectations of my position. However, like a good criminal, I decided to forgo these terms, feeling my agenda is more important than employment expectations. Read More…

Days 9 & 10: Just a Reminder

Once again, time for a double post. Life has been pretty hectic lately, and on top of that, I’m starting to feel a little sick. No worries though, it’s just a small headache and runny nose. I’ve been feeling lethargic because of it, but otherwise I’m fully functional.

Regardless, I was still able to perform some RAKs. And instead of splitting the post in two, I’ll talk about them together since they were similar. Read More…

Day 8: Share the Music

CD FlowerToday I decided to share some music as my random act of kindness. I believe that there are a few things in the world that without a doubt every person likes/wants. Happiness, Love, and Respect are all examples. Music is another.

Of course, with all of these human desires there are differences in how people define them. Something that would make one person happy will not necessarily make another person happy. Music is the same way. Everyone has their own preferences. In that sense, it is difficult to know just what type of music to give to someone, especially if the person is a stranger you don’t know. Day 7: Laundry Day

Laundry MachinesThe first week is done! I can hardly believe it’s gone by this quickly. I predicted that performing random acts of kindness would get easier as the days went on. I was wrong. Each one takes up time, energy, and thought. And you often don’t even get the satisfaction of seeing the person’s reaction to your work.

It’s a tough job, but I’m happy to do it. :)

Today’s RAK took place in the laundry room. In my building there is never enough laundry machines to go around. People are often waiting for others to finish so they can put their clothes in next. Read More…
